Mathematical Mindset.

Welcome to 6th Grade Math Lab! This semester students will have the opportunity to increase their skills in Math. At our own pace, students will be able to explore and review topics from current core classes and master skills and concepts from prior grade levels.

Believing in Yourself!

I spend a lot of time at the beginning and throughout the year working on building a Growth Mindset with students. For many students a class like this can feel overwhelming, so pumping ourselves up and remembering to stay positive is a huge focus. We are covering A LOT of ideas, skills, and processes. A huge goal of this class is to push ourselves towards better understanding and mastery.

This WILL BE challenging!

I often remind students to give themselves some credit. I want them to remember that we are here to support them. Their growth is the most important goal of this class.

So, students: Keep your head up and believe in yourself! You've got this!

Classroom Expectations

My expectations for students are simple and align with school wide expectations. There is a no tolerance policy for any bullying, so I expect students to treat others, the class, and themselves with respect. Our class and our groups are safe environment. Students are responsible for themselves and their learning. This means students have to work on asking questions, as well as accepting help, advice, and feedback from peers and the teacher. Lastly, I expect students to show up with their brains, try their best, and never give up!

Of course, some of these go along with developing a growth mindset; therefore they will take work!

Grading Policy

Standards Based Grading

The emphasis of this class is to gain and master skills. Grades can sometimes make us feel like we shouldn’t try new things or if we aren’t good at something right away, then we aren’t good at all. Because of this, grading will be to provide feedback that shows students' progress towards a skill.

In PowerSchool, you will be able to see each assignment with a score of 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Although PowerSchool will make it seem like each grade is worth 3 or 4 points- this is inaccurate. These scores simply indicate where students are at in understanding certain skills. Students will have multiple opportunities to improve their work and continually practice so they can show proficiency and mastery in every skill.
